Leeds Beckett University, amongst other things, prides its self on being a green university and achieves this with many of their buildings obtaining a BREEAM excellence standard which takes into account heat retention, energy efficiency and occupant well-being. Carnegie Village, on-site student accommodation, even achieved a Passivhaus classification. The University is recognised for this and has been awarded a ‘First’ by People and Planet every year since the Green League of Universities was published in 2007. The oldest building on either of the Leeds Becket University sites is The Grange built in 1752, located on the modern-day Headingly campus. The longest standing educational institute at Leeds Becket University is the Leeds Mechanics institute which was founded in 1824 The next major institute to be founded was the Leeds Institute of Commerce 1845 which provided the grounds for the Headingly campus today. This was closely followed by the founding of the Leeds Collage of Art in 1846. Over the years more and more collages and institutes were founded and added to the existing campus at Beckett Park. In 1970 Leeds Polytechnic is formed from a combination of numerous collages and institutions, the Polytechnic continues to evolve and expand until becoming a university in its own right in 1992. Leeds Beckett University continued to grow and expanded and now owns building all over the city including the architecturally awarded Bridgwater place which is home to Leeds Beckett’s Art, Environment and Technology departments. Some of the other buildings owned by the university include The Carnegie Stand at Headingly Rugby Stadium and The Rose Bowl an iconic city centre building.
