Hotel near Victoria Gate
Opened in October 2016, Victoria Gate is the latest exciting addition to Leeds ever-expanding, vivacious shopping scene.
Anchored by the five-storey John Lewis store, the largest outside of London, Victoria Gate houses an abundance of luxury and aspirational brands in a richly decadent celebration of 21st Century architecture.
The building’s design draws heavily on Leeds’ rich retail history. The exterior is made up of three distinct facades, the most visually intriguing; the central block in which John Lewis stands, is encased with an extravagant weaving of acid-etched concrete: an architectural interpretation of Leeds’ longstanding tradition of manufacturing textiles.
Inside lay two sloping arcades meeting at each end. Lined with curved shopfronts and tiled with glistening herringbone flooring, the arcades are enclosed with a roof of intricately latticed steel and glass that floods the entire space with natural light. A contemporary abstraction of the elaborate Victorian arcades iconic of the city’s architectural legacy; Victoria Gate functions as confidently as a visual spectacle as it does retail destination.
Spanning almost 25,000 square feet, John Lewis is undoubtedly the jewel in Victoria Gate’s crown. Five floors of beauty, fashion, homeware and electricals are joined by a coffee shop, fourth-floor restaurant, travel consultants, beauty bar and skin spa in what stands as the retail giant’s flagship store of the North.
Victoria Gate is additionally home to a medley of luxury fashion and lifestyle brands from the UK and further afield, from designer favourites such as Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, to intriguing new additions such as organic body care and home fragrance company Neom Organics and Australian tea brand T2, many of whom chose Victoria Gate as their first venture out of the Capital. For foodies, there is the opportunity to try something new with Belgian boulangerie Le Pain Quotidien and Argentinian steakhouse Cau.
And excitingly, Victoria Gate is not yet completed. 2017 will see the opening of a rooftop restaurant from the people behind Trinity Leeds’ Angelica and Crafthouse, along with the highly-anticipated launch of the Victoria Gate Casino, which at 4,645 square metres, stands to be the biggest casino in the North. Highroller, avid shopper or decadent diner; there is something for everyone at Victoria Gate from dawn till dusk.
Looking for some where to stay after spending the day in the newly-anointed shopping capital of the North, Clayton Hotel Leeds can be found just over a mile away from Victoria Gate and can be reached by a twenty-minute walk or a five-minute taxi ride.LESS INFORMATION
